Serena Williams, winner of 11 Grand Slam singles titles, including three at the US Open, will be autographing copies of her new book, "ON THE LINE," at USTA Membership on Monday, Sept. 7th*, at 11:30 a.m. The signing session will be limited to copies of the book, which may be purchased in advance at USTA Membership in the Indoor Training Center, the US Open Bookstore located in the South Plaza of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, or USOpenShop.org today.

Serena sides with Safina

NEW YORK, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Champion Serena Williams felt Dinara Safina had every right to feel annoyed after U.S. Open organisers bumped the Russian off Arthur Ashe Stadium for her third-round match against Petra Kvitova. World number one Safina and Czech Kvitova had been scheduled to kick off Saturday night’s programme on the main arena but after the daytime schedule overran by almost three hours, the duo were moved to the smaller Louis Armstrong Court.

By switching the match, American James Blake and Spanish 14th seed Tommy Robredo, who had been expected to follow the Safina-Kvitova clash, could start their clash simultaneously on the Ashe arena. “Why didn’t they move the men’s match again? They were second on,” asked Serena on Sunday. “I have to take her side on this. She was first on. They should have moved the men’s match. Simple as that, that’s how it should be done. “If you’re supposed to play a match, you’re supposed to play it, and then you move the next match.”

Safina, who was beaten by Kvitova, slammed the organisers for favouring the men’s match and said: “I’m number one player in the world, why did they move me? I don’t think it’s a fair decision they made.”

Serena demolishes Daniela Hantuchova in 4th Rnd

Serena defeated Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 6-0 in 4th round action at the US Open. The second seed won 10 straight games from 2-2 to overpower Hantuchova in 64 minutes and reach the last eight without dropping a set. Hantuchova started brightly but as soon as Wimbledon and Australian Open champion Williams found her range, the match was as good as over. The American broke twice in the first set and three times in the second to set up a quarter-final against either Russian seventh seed Vera Zvonareva or 10th seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy.

Williams has reached the quarterfinals at 11 of the past 12 major tournaments and won the title at three of the past four. With the score 2-all against Hantuchova, Williams hit three aces to hold for a 3-2 lead -- and she wouldn't lose a game the rest of the way. She has won all eight sets she's played this year at Flushing Meadows. "I tried to relax," Williams said after improving to 8-1 against Hantuchova over their careers. "Sometimes I'm such a perfectionist, I put too much stress on myself. I was like, 'Serena, relax!"

Serena stops Sanchez; Advances to 4th Round

NEW YORK (AFP) - Defending champion Serena Williams moved a step closer defending her US Open title on Thursday, but had to dig deep to see off Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez after the Spaniard threw caution to the wind. The 27-year-old American won 6-3, 7-5 to reach a fourth-round showdown with Slovakian Grand Slam regular Daniela Hantuchova, who eased past Vania King of the United States 6-2, 6-2.

The Williams-Martinez Sanchez match had an undertone of friction as the two had clashed during a third-round match at the French Open when Williams accused her opponent of cheating by refusing to admit that a ball had hit her arm. The American eventually won that match in three sets, but she was outspoken in her criticism of Martinez Sanchez afterwards. This time around, Williams let her tennis do the talking although she was made to work hard in the second set as the Spaniard decided that if she was to seek salvation it would only come at the net.

Her tactics briefly worked as Williams saw her serve broken twice in a row to fall 1-3 down. That only served to bring the aggressive best out of the American as she got back on serve with a superb lob that left Martinez Sanchez hopelessly stranded at the net. Games stayed with serve after that until 5-5, when Williams sent two passing shots screaming past the Spaniard. Martinez battled back to deuce and staved off a series of break points before Williams finally converted thanks to back-to-back double faults.

Serena made no mistake in serving out for the match. "She was serving really well especially in the second set, but I just kept on fighting," she said. "It's not often that I play someone that serves and volleys like that. Playing doubles here helped with that. "I got super-pumped when 1-3 down in the second set as I knew I had to recharge my batteries."

When she met the media afterwards, the 11-times grand-slam champion sported a T-shirt with the slogan "Can't spell Dynasty without Nasty" emblazoned on the front. "I got nasty today, but to myself," she said. "I was just screaming to myself because I wasn't very happy with my performance. "This is the new "Delicious" campaign that I'm a part of, because I'm delicious."

In a break with tradition on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the women’s match was scheduled after the men’s contest in the evening session and the second-seeded Williams opted not to hang around for too long. In a near perfect match, Serena overwhelmed the 51st-ranked Czink in just 52 minutes (6-1, 6-1). The competitive fire in Williams seemed to ignite after a linesman called a foot fault on her when she served an apparent ace in the fourth game of the opening set. Williams turned and glared, setting her hands on her hips. She just stood there with a straight face for a few seconds, staring down the official. When play resumed, Williams pushed a forehand into the net, then again sent a serious look in his direction. And on the following point, Williams smacked an ace at 115 mph and looked over once more, as though to say, ``Was my foot in the right place that time?!'' ``I was kind of frustrated because I hit a great serve, best serve I hit in months. Yeah, I was just like, 'Ugh!''' Williams said. That call seem to be enough of an annoyance to cause Serena to kick her game into gear and we know when that happens, no one can hang with her.

Serena had 25 winners and 9 unforced errors to go along with 5 aces and 3 double faults. She executed her game in a big way and looked unstoppable: the movement, the ground strokes, the serve, the drop shots, everything seemed to click. Serena is seeking her fourth U.S. Open championship and 12th Grand Slam singles title overall (which would tie her with tennis great, Billie Jean King). The American is trying to become the first woman to win consecutive titles at Flushing Meadows since her older sister Venus in 2000-01.

Serena defeats Glatch; Advances to 2nd Round

NEW YORK (AFP) - Serena Williams got the defense of her US Open title off to a low-key start with an untroubled 6-4, 6-1 first round win over fellow American Alexa Glatch on Monday. Although never in danger, the 27-year-old second seed blew hot and cold in an error-strewn match that seldom rose above the ordinary. Both players struggled to cope with the gusty conditions. Williams jumped out into a 5-1 lead in the first set before allowing 19-year-old Glatch to close up to 5-4. Her strong serving then came to her rescue as she moved a set ahead.

Glatch, who failed to win a single match in the US hardcourt season prior to Flushing Meadows, held serve to open the second set, but two games later she was broken as Williams stepped up the pace. There was no way back for Glatch as Williams romped away to a comfortable win. Williams has won three of the last four Grand Slam titles and a fourth US Open win here in two weeks time would give her 12 in total, equalling the mark of her childhood idol Billie-Jean King. INTERESTING STATISTIC: Serena has NEVER lost in the 1st Round of a Major - She's a perfect 40-0.
