Serena sails into 3rd Round at Australian Open

Defending champion Serena Williams looked simply superb in her 2nd round thrashing of Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-1, in a match that lasted 67 minutes. Serena served at 66% for the match and won 91% of her 1st serves. She also threw in 8 aces and 2 double faults. The only "spot" on this match wasn't the play but the relentless commentary about the US Open incident. Serena played some flawless tennis and appears to be extremely fit. Keep up the good work Serena! Her 3rd round opponent will be Carla Suarez Navarro.

I'm glad you commented on the commentary! I was so annoyed by them last night. I was so disappointed in how they overshadowed the end of the match with that incessant dialogue. I wanted to email espn or somebody about that. Enough is enough!! And I love your blog! Thanks!!

You got to be kidding me? Who were the commentators in this match and what channel were you watching? Why can't these haters leave Serena alone and maintain a professional, neutral position while commentating. Serena needs to play exactly like this agst. her stiffer competition like Henin. There is no doubt in my mind that she can dominate Henin if she mixes it up frequently, take away the center of court, and force Henin to hit winners from the baseline opposed to the net.

Serena looked very good to me in this match. She held her own against an opponent who goes for broke on every shot and her serve was on point. I don't know if anyone else watched the match on ESPN like I did but I have to say, I was disgusted with Mary Carillo. Her venomous and hateful comments truly overshadowed how well Serena was playing. I am disgusted that this woman is allowed to sit in and commentate on Serena's matches.

Hello Monika,

The match was on ESPN2 and the commentator who "couldn't let go" of the US Open incident was Mary Carillo. Like "Shawn" said I too was so close to emailing ESPN2 because Carillo "tainted" the match with her "negative" non-match related commentary.
