Serena defeats Li Na; Advances to Semifinal

Serena Williams put a firm halt on a run of surprise results at Wimbledon by defeating China's Li Na 7-5, 6-3 and moving closer to her 13th Grand Slam championship. The top-seeded Serena had 11 aces to take her tournament total to 73, breaking the record of 72 she set last year. She had 21 winners and just six unforced errors.

Serena took advantage of her only break point in the 11th game before serving out for the opener after 45 minutes, and stormed home in the second, raising her finger to the skies when a Li forehand went wide to give her victory. Considering Serena has yet to drop a set at this year's event, and won the first set in each of her first three matches 6-0 and has belted down 73 aces in the process, it is difficult to see how anyone can topple her from her perch.

While Serena has 12 grand slam singles trophies, including three at Wimbledon, contested 15 grand slam finals and 18 semis, her trio of challengers can boast one semi-final showing between them - with Zvonareva taking that honour. Venu and Serena Williams have ruled Wimbledon with a vice-like grip for most of the 21st century, winning eight titles between them since 2000. On Thursday, Kvitova will be out to try and end that domination and hope Serena surrenders more than the measly three games she gave up in their only previous meeting.

There should be no doubt at all now - Serena is far and away the true #1 player in the world right now. I'd love to see her win this again!
